Treatment of Seborrhea and Seborrheic Dermatitis in "ON Clinic Odessa"

Seborrhea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, which is characterized by a violation of the sebaceous gland function. Sebum produced in excessive amounts is a beneficial environment for development of pathogenic fungi. If there is gland hypofunction (insufficient secretion), the natural protective skin function is disturbed, which also provokes inflammation. In connection with this, the following forms of seborrhea are distinguished:

  • Oily

  • Dry

  • Mixed.

Symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis manifest themselves gradually. First, the skin begins to peel and itch on the areas of a large accumulation of the sebaceous glands (face, scalp, ears or shoulder blade area). After that, the affected areas are covered with red spots, which in course of time grow larger and turn into scaly plaques. One of the main "satellites" of seborrhea of the scalp is dandruff. In a dry form of the disease, it is small and abundant, in an oily form it looks like agglomerated flakes.

Seborrheic dermatitis of the face is often accompanied by acne. The skin becomes more sensitive and prone to irritation. The so-called T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) is the most vulnerable. If oily shine and rashes in these areas worry you for a long time, you should consult a specialist.

Diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis consists primarily in visual examination of the skin and systematization of the medical history of the patient. If necessary, dermato- or trichoscopy and laboratory blood tests can be performed. Only when the clinical picture is clear, a treatment plan is developed.

Causes of seborrhea

A causative agent of seborrhea is the yeast-like fungus Malassezia. If the sebaceous glands function normally, it is totally harmless for the body. If their function is violated, fungi begin to multiply actively and cause seborrheic dermatitis with skin lesions. Seborrhea can also have the following causes:

  • Hormonal imbalance (especially during the puberty)

  • Chronic diseases of the digestive or endocrine system

  • Genetic predisposition

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Tobacco or alcohol abuse

  • Unbalanced diet (eating too fatty or unbalanced food)

  • Immunodeficiency.

Oily seborrhea is most common in adolescents and usually disappears after the puberty. However, this does not mean that you should not treat it because advanced forms can lead to multiple skin rash. In men and women of older age (from 30 to 50 years), dry seborrhea is diagnosed more often, which is a consequence of systemic disorders in the body.

Treatment of seborrhea (seborrheic dermatitis) in Odessa is carried out using:

  • Antifungal and anti-inflammatory drugs

  • Physiotherapy procedures

  • Vitamin complexes.

If the disease has affected the scalp, therapeutic shampoos are always prescribed. Special ointments and creams are used to eliminate face rash. To prevent of seborrhea, it is recommended not to abuse "harmful" food and alcohol, manage personal hygiene and systematically strengthen immunity.
