What is atheroma?

Atheroma is a benign tumor of the sebaceous gland (epithelial cyst). The growth itself has a clear localization, a rounded shape, mobility and is not accompanied by pain. The tumor body consists of a capsule with fluid inside.

Pathology is often formed in a place where accumulation of sebaceous glands is anatomically provided.

In most cases, the following is present and diagnosticated:

• atheroma on the face;
• atheroma on the head (especially on the scalp);
• in the armpits;
• on the external genitalia.

Diagnostics consists of examination and palpation, as clinical symptoms suggest the presence of enlarged ducts of the sebaceous gland and capillaries on the skin. This feature allows you to differentiate the atheroma from lipoma or fibroma. Additionally, a biopsy of the growth may be necessary.

Removal of atheroma

Usually, surgical removal of atheroma is performed with mandatory capsule removal to rule out the presence of secretion producing cells. To do this, discission is made over the affected skin area and the capsule is completely peeled: its walls are separated from local tissues. If atheroma is infected and contains pus, then the drainage system is first placed to drain the contents, then the capsule is removed and antibiotic therapy is performed. These procedures allow you to get rid of the tumor completely and prevent its recurrence.
