Treatment of ingrown nail in Cherkasy

Nail ingrowth or onychocryptosis is a fairly common problem causing discomfort and severe pain. Timely correction of pathology helps not only get rid of discomfort, but also prevent the development of possible complications: inflammation, the formation of purulent focus and even abscess.

Surgeons of the medical center “ON Clinic” provide a range of services for the treatment of all types of onychocryptosis at any stage of the disease, including the ingrown nail removal surgery.

What is ingrown nail?

The ingrowth of the nail plate into the toe tissue on one or two sides is called onychocryptosis. In most cases, the pathology is accompanied by an inflammatory process in the surrounding soft tissues, swelling and pain. Prolonged ignoring of the improper growth of the nail plate leads to tissue ingrowth, toe deformation (swelling) and difficult walking.

In surgery, the most common form of such disease is an ingrown big toenail.

The causes of anomalies of nail plate growth are the following:

  • Improper shoes (tight, etc.);
  • injury to big toe;
  • genetic predisposition;
  • mycosis of the nail plate;
  • structural features of nails and toes;
  • disturbed local circulation;
  • hypercalcemia (excess of Ca2 + ions);
  • valgus orthopathology;
  • improper nail care during the pedicure.

Since nail ingrowth often develops due to changes in hormonal status, pathology is observed in adolescents of both sexes and in women during gestation.

But not only the toes are vulnerable for disease, the ingrown nail on the hand and on any finger occur even in infants.

According to the degree of nail ingrowth, onychocryptosis is classified as follows:

  • the first stage – accompanied by edema, hyperemia and pain at the place of contact of the nail plate and soft tissues;
  • the second stage – characterized by the formation of an infection foci and pus accumulation;
  • the third stage – combination of hypertrophy of the soft tissues of the nail wall and chronic inflammatory process.

Removal of ingrown toenail

Since non-surgical treatment methods are effective only at the early stage of the pathology course, we recommend that you consult a surgeon when the first clinical symptoms appear. But usually, surgeons are already dealing with advanced onychocryptosis, when it is impossible to do without removing the whole or a part of the nail plate.

Today, the most common form of surgical therapy is marginal excision. It involves excising a small pathological area of the nail plate (up to 4 mm) and removing the zone of its growth. These measures will help not only to get rid of the disease situationally, but also prevent recidivation.
