Treatment of children's tonsilitis in Kharkiv

If your child complains of sore throat with pain increasing while swallowing, has high temperature and he became floppy and apathic, you should see him to a pediatrician or pediatric otolaryngologist – your child may suffer from tonsillitis.

What is pediatric tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is a contagious disease affecting palatine tonsils (glands). They present a formation of lymphoid tissue performing the protective function. Tonsils of infants are underdeveloped that is why this disease is rarely diagnosticated among newborns. At the age of 5-7 years, lymphoid tissue enlarges and children can catch tonsillitis.

The risk factors are the following:

  • influenza, ARVI and other respiratory infections;
  • local or general hypothermia;
  • tooth caries and other diseases of oral cavity;
  • hypovitaminosis.

Otolaryngologists identify two types of tonsillitis:

  • acute tonsillitis in children (St. Blaize's disease). It occurs at acute infection followed by fever and sore throat. Palatine tonsils swell, become red, small ulcers or purulence clots may appear;
  • chronic tonsillitis in children. It develops on case of inadequate treatment of the acute form or in the setting of often respiratory pathologies. It is characterised by huskiness in throat, woolly voice and loss of appetite. The disease is subject to frequent recrudescences.

The disease has viral or bacterial nature. Treatment management depends on the pathogen, patient's age and his state of health.

Danger of pediatric tonsillitis

The main symptoms of tonsillitis are the following:

  • huskiness and burning in throat turning then into pain increasing while swallowing;
  • temperature rise;
  • woolly voice.

It is impossible to self-diagnosticate the disease: it can be easily missed up with ordinary flue, pharyngitis, laryngitis and other respiratory infections. That is why at the first signs of this disease it is necessary to house-call pediatrician or to make an appointment to pediatric otolaryngologist.

The main danger of acute form consists in the fact that it can result in process chronization unless treated properly. Angina can also cause such complication as paratonsillar abscess (accumulation of purulent). In case of pathogen extension to adjacent organs and tissues, heart diseases (encarditis) and kidney diseases (pyelonephritis) develop.

How long does temperature hold in case of pediatric tonsillitis?

Despite the fact that one of angina symptoms is fever, no significant temperature rise can be detected: it holds within 37-38℃. That is why while treating the disease, doctor may not prescribe fever reducers: the temperature will return to normal as soon as the immunity, together with antimicrobial or antiviral drugs, combat with pathogens. The temperature usually holds up to 2-3 days from the start of treatment.

Treatment of tonsillitis in children

Treatment regimen for chronic tonsillitis in children or acute form of disease shall be determined and controlled by experienced pediatrician or otolaryngologist. Drugs are selected based on the fact what pathogen – bacteria or virus – causes the infection. In the first case, antibiotics are prescribed, in the second one – effective anti-viral drugs.

The following can be prescribed additionally:

  • local anesthetics (tablets, sprays);
  • immunomodulators;
  • vitamin complexes.

Tonsillitis treatment by traditional remedies (restorative drinks, gargling) can cause harm to a patient, result in increase of inflammation and contamination of adjacent tissues. Self-treatment is unacceptable! At the first signs of disease, you should see the child to a competent doctor.
