How we perform ultrasonography of a child?

Ultrasonography of a child is specific. Children often behave restlessly in new places and with unfamiliar people; that is why this procedure is performed when at least one parent is around. In case of a baby, it is possible to feed it during ultrasonography or give it a toy. In case of elder children (3 to 6 years) it’s desirable to tell and show beforehand what will be done in doctor’s room, this will relieve anxiety and improve interaction between the doctor and young patient.

The examination progress of pediatric sonography is similar to that one of adults. Exception applies to transvaginal ultrasonography. This type of diagnostics is performed for sexually active teenagers for diagnostics of disorders in productive system (menolipsis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, etc.). In case of virginal membrane intactness examination of reproductive organs is performed by transabdominal (through stomach) or transperineal method.

Тransperineal examination method is performed with sensor in sterile cover inserted in the area of vulvar lips under pubic joint. Doctor moves ultrasonic sensor up to anal sphincter (perineum zone) thus examining pelvic organs, including vaginal opening.

For successful ultrasound examination of child’s body, it is necessary to be prepared for it, for instance:

• Ultrasonography of liver and gall bladder is performed in fasting state (children under 1 year are examined in 2 hours after feeding or immediately before feeding);
• Ultrasonography of urinary system organs–with filled urinary bladder;
• Ultrasonography of abdominal organs – with preliminary 3-day diet for decrease of aerogenesis, etc.

The following requires no preparation: diagnostics of functioning of the heart, thyroid and mammary glands, brain and joints.

What can children eat before ultrasonography of abdominal cavity?

In order to obtain maximum information on functioning of abdominal organs during the examination, it is necessary to decrease air volume and gas production in bowels. Products promoting aerogenesis are beans, fresh vegetables (especially all kinds of cabbage), flour-based and dairy food.

The following products are permitted during preparation for ultrasonography of abdominal organs:

• Boiled meat and fish;
• Water porridge;
• Baked fruits and vegetables;
• Non-fat soups;
• Eggs.

Meal pattern should be split and include up to 6 meals. It is prohibited to chase food immediately with water and it is undesirable to drink sweet tea during preparation for examination.

Danger of ultrasonography for a child

It is not dangerous at all. Ultrasonography is absolutely safe examination method, it has no negative effect on child’s body. Moreover, this method is compulsory within health survey for assessment of condition and development of baby’s organ systems. Ultrasonography can be performed as many times as needed in accordance with doctor’s prescription.
