Treatment of lower extremity arteries and veins in Kharkiv

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes an increase in the number of patients faced with vascular pathologies of the lower extremities. Up to 30% of elderly citizens suffer from diseases of the arteries and veins and have to be regularly followed up by a phlebologist. But modern methods of diagnosis and treatment give good results: due to timely visit to specialists, the doctors manage to restore the health of the leg vessels.

What are diseases of the arteries and veins of the lower extremities?

The vessels on the legs are under increased stress: they have to surmount gravity in order to “raise” the blood to the heart. This work involves not only the arteries themselves, but also the muscles surrounding them. But under the influence of external and internal factors, the well-coordinated work of blood vessels and soft tissues is disrupted.

This leads to the development of various diseases of the arteries and veins on the legs, namely the following:

  • atherosclerosis. The vascular walls lose flexibility and elasticity with the simultaneous deposition of cholesterol plaques on them which narrow the lumen. The main symptom is rapid fatigue of the legs when walking;
  • endarteritis. As a result, the inflammatory process begins, affecting the walls of arteries and veins. They narrow disrupting the normal nutrition of surrounding tissues. Gradually, the cells die off, aggravating the patient’s condition. Signs of the initial stage: edema, fatigue of the lower extremities, skin ulcers;
  • acute arterial obstruction. It develops affected by blood clotting disorders. It leads to arterial ischemia, the main symptom: sharp pain;
  • varicose veins. The disease is caused by the destruction of the valvular heart apparatus of veins on the lower extremities and the expansion of blood vessel walls. The liquid stagnates in the legs, they swell, get tired quickly, begin to hurt after exertion.

There are also other vein diseases: aneurysms, thrombosis. But their symptoms are similar: pain in the legs that grows with the progression of the pathology, their swelling, the gradual development of lameness, occurrence of trophic ulcers.

The causes of vascular disorders are different: age-related changes, genetic predisposition, hormonal and endocrine disorders. Men and women over 40 years old, heavy smokers, overweight people are at risk. Constant physical activity (hard work, professional sports) also accelerates wear and tear of the arteries and increases the likelihood of the disease.

It is recommended to be diagnosed by a phlebologist before the first symptoms appear. The doctor will establish the current state of the vessels, give prophylactic recommendations or, if pathological processes are detected, select an effective treatment.

How to treat diseases of the arteries and veins on the lower extremities?

Treatment of diseases of the veins on the lower extremities is selected by the phlebologist after the diagnosis, considering the characteristics of a particular patient’s body. In the initial stages, it is enough to do the following:

  • drug therapy - drugs are prescribed that maintain the elasticity of vascular walls, reduce cholesterol deposition, thin the blood;
  • formation of healthy habits - maintaining a balanced diet, quitting smoking and alcohol abuse, moderate physical activity;
  • wearing special elastic clothes (shaping stockings) reducing the load on the venous system.

If the disease worsens and the vessels are severely damaged, the intervention of a vascular surgeon is necessary. Depending on the indication, he will perform shunt procedures, angioplasty, phlebectomy or another procedure.
