Treatment of aphasia and dysphasia in Kharkiv

Treatment of aphasia and dysphasia carried out by the specialists of “ON Clinic Kharkiv” allows you to restore speech and speech perception skills as soon as possible.

What are dysphasia and aphasia?

Dysphasia and aphasia is the absence or impairment of speech that occurs due to various reasons. So, dysphasia appears when the corresponding areas of the cerebral cortex are affected during the perinatal period or during the early development of the child, that is, the mechanism for the formation of speech stereotypes (position of the lips or tongue, breathing rhythm) is disrupted. Aphasia develops as a result of vascular pathologies of the brain, craniocerebral trauma, when the formed speech stereotypes disintegrate. It manifests itself as a complete or partial loss of the ability to understand and express speech.

Among the main causes of pathological speech disorders, experts distinguish damage to the temporal and frontal lobes of the cerebral cortex due to:

  • stroke;
  • presence of a tumor;
  •  trauma or brain surgery;
  • infections or inflammation in the brain (encephalitis, abscess);
  • chronic diseases of the central nervous system (Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, migraine, etc.) and so on.

In addition, there are a number of factors that increase the likelihood of dysphasia in adults: hereditary predisposition, age, atherosclerotic cerebral vascular disease and persistent hypertension.

The clinical manifestations of these disorders depend on the size and location of the lesion, they often manifest themselves as:

  • loss of the ability to understand written words;
  •  inability to remember the name of a known item;
  • inability to reproduce a familiar concept, etc.

Dysphasia in children is expressed in the late appearance of speech with a limited number of words, as well as in the repeated repetition of one syllable or word distortions.

Dysphasia is classified depending on the characteristics of its manifestation, namely:

  • difficulty finding words and their pronunciation - motor dysphasia;
  • difficulty understanding the speech heard - sensory dysphasia.

The main types of aphasia are the following:

  • Wernicke’s aphasia or sensory aphasia, when the ability to speak coherent speech is preserved, but understanding, writing and reading of words is impaired;
  • Broca’s aphasia or motor aphasia characterized by the constant ability to write, read and understand the meaning of words, but at the same time it is difficult to reproduce them (a “telegraphic” style of speech appears);
  • dynamic aphasia, accompanied by a change in the communicative function of speech (difficulty in the logical construction and implementation of the conceived text);
  • abnormal aphasia - inability to use terms, forcing to use their synonyms or explain the meaning of words;
  • total aphasia, when many types of disorders are combined, affecting all aspects and functions of speech.

The restoration of speech in aphasia largely depends on the cause that caused the disorder, as well as on the age and premorbid background of the patient (pre-morbidity).

Can dysphasia be cured?

A favorable prognosis for the dysphasia treatment is provided by a course of special techniques for the formation and consolidation of the skills of creating correct speech stereotypes. It can also include drugs improving brain activity and blood circulation.

How is aphasia treated?

Treatment of motor aphasia, like the treatment of sensory aphasia, considers the treatment of a disease that has led to disorders of already formed speech stereotypes. In the future, the work of a neurologist can be supplemented by classes with a speech therapist.

One of the most common conditions leading to aphasia is stroke. Treatment of aphasia after a stroke involves an individual program, since its composition depends on the characteristics and severity of the disorders.
