Treatment of neuritis and polyneuritis in Kharkiv

Treatment and diagnostics of the inflammatory process in the nerve fibers, carried out by neurologists of the medical center “ON Clinic Kharkiv”, allow, in the shortest possible period of time, to establish the cause of the pathology and eliminate it. Timely access to a specialized doctor ensures the restoration of the function of the affected nerve, and prevents the development of complications (muscle atrophy, significant impairment of vision and hearing).

Neuritis and polyneuritis are distinguished among inflammatory diseases of nerve fibers. Neuritis is an inflammation of the peripheral nerve trunk, which is accompanied by loss of sensation and movement disorders in the innervated area. Polyneuritis is characterized by multiple damage to nerve fibers, for example, with damage to the intercostal nerves.

The main causes of the development of inflammation in the nervous tissue are bacteria and viruses (influenza, herpes, etc.), and pathology can also occur as a result of injuries, metabolic disorders and angiopathologies.

In most cases, lesions of nerves in the canals of the musculoskeletal system appear due to their narrow anatomical structure or compression (tunnel syndrome of the hand, neuritis of the median nerve, etc.).

The classification of diseases depends on the nature and location of the inflammation. The most common types of neuritis are the following:

  • neuritis of the facial nerve, in which gustatory sensitivity decreases and the facial muscles of the face are affected;
  • neuritis of the auditory nerve, which causes a decrease in hearing acuity, tinnitus;
  • retrobulbar neuritis (a subtype of optic neuritis), which causes pain when the eyeball moves, narrowing of the peripheral boundaries of vision;
  • neuritis of the ulnar nerve, which reduces the sensitivity of the hand, V and IV fingers;
  •  neuritis (sciatica) of the sciatic nerve, manifested by acute or aching pain in the buttocks, back of the thigh;
  • trigeminal neuritis, accompanied by intense throbbing pain in the face;
  • vestibular neuritis causing dizziness, etc.

Among polyneuritis, the following types are distinguished:

  • infectious neuritis of the lower extremities, which develops in the nerve fibers of the feet and progresses along the ascending pathways;
  • diabetic polyneuritis, which affects many nerves in the body;
  • alimentary polyneuritis resulting from a lack of B vitamins and causing a change in the activity of the heart, etc.

 The clinical picture in polyneuritis is characterized by deterioration of motor activity (complete or partial paralysis) and sensitivity (lowering the temperature of the feet and hands), pain and the appearance of trophic ulcers on the skin.

How is neuritis treated?

Neuritis treatment is aimed at treating the cause of the disease. For this the following can be used: antibacterial and antiviral drugs, vasodilators (vasodilatation), anti-inflammatory drugs are also used. In addition to the drug course, a course of physiotherapy and massage is effective.

How is polyneuritis treated?

Therapy and rehabilitation for polyneuritis depends on the cause and degree of damage to the nerve fiber. Usually, drug therapy is prescribed, involving the administration of analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs and means of stimulating metabolism, restoring physical activity. Performing physiotherapy exercises and taking vitamin complexes can speed up the process of regeneration of weakened functions.

The specialists of our medical center practice an individually oriented approach to the treatment of patients, which significantly improves the effectiveness of therapy and speeds up complete recovery.
