Treatment of dacryocystitis in Kharkov
Inflammation of lacrimal sac is called dacryocystitis. This disease develops as a result of blockage or narrowing of the lacrimal-nasal canal and can quickly turn into a chronic form. Infections of the eyes, inflammation in the nose (sinuses), colds, facial injuries, as well as congenital pathologies can lead to blockage of the canal. Obstruction of the lacrimal canal causes problems with the efflux of tear fluid resulting in the ingestion of pathogenic microflora into the lacrimal sac (provokes an inflammatory process).
Symptoms of dacryocystitis
The signs of dacryocystitis development include the sensation of pain and gripes in the eye, as well as purulence and lacrimation, swelling of the surrounding tissues. The disease can occur in children and adults. Doctors often diagnose this pathology in newborns.
If untreated, complications can occur, for instance, phlegmon (inflammation of the orbital fiber leading to necrosis of its tissues). As a rule, neglecting the treatment of lacrimal sac inflammation will require surgical intervention sooner or later.
Dacryocystitis – diagnosis and treatment
The ophthalmologists at the ophthalmology department of the medical center “ON Clinic Kharkiv” see children and adults. The doctor conducts comprehensive examination of the patient’s sight, confirms or denies the diagnosis of dacryocystitis, and also tells how to treat dacryocystitis (if detected). For diagnosis, a palpation examination of the area near the eyes, examination of the visual organ (West color test, probing of the lacrimal canal, lacrimal-nasal test, contrast radiography of the eye sockets, bacteriological culture of purulent secretion) are used. In children, inoculation can be done in agreement with the laboratory.
After confirming the diagnosis, the doctor selects treatment regimen. The following is usually prescribed:
- drug therapy (antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs);
- opening a purulent bag (if necessary);
- lacrimal sac massage (in children: parents teach this);
- vitamin therapy and UHF therapy for adults (exposure to an electric field of a certain frequency).
During the rehabilitation period, patients are forbidden to wear contact correction, to apply bandages to the affected eye area without the recommendation of ophthalmologist, or to touch the cornea with the hands. All this helps preventing the complications.
Dacryocystitis in children.
Dacryocystitis in a child can be primary (congenital) and secondary. The first one occurs due to abnormality in the development of the nasolacrimal duct. The second one may appear in a baby after suffering an acute respiratory viral infection, rhinitis or sinusitis. Sometimes the disease develops due to the presence of polyps in the nose.
Dacryocystitis is treated at the medical center “ON Clinic Kharkiv” in children only after ophthalmological examination. When confirming the diagnosis, therapy is aimed at restoring the patency of the canal, eliminating infection and inflammation, as well as preventing complications.
