Surgical removal of ovarian cysts in Kharkov

Ovarian cyst is a benign tumor-like formation filled mainly with fluid. Cysts arise inside the ovary or on its surface. Ovarian cysts are a common gynecological pathology among women of childbearing age, as their formation is the result of hormonal changes that occur during menstruation.

Neoplasms can be of different sizes (from 1-2 to dozens of centimeters in diameter). Ovarian cysts are divided into functional and organic. The first one is the most common type of tumor. Functional ovarian cysts in most cases resolve on their own within 1-3 months and, as a rule, do not require treatment, but only observation. Organic cysts are subject to surgical removal, since they do not regress and can degenerate into a malignant tumor.

Types of functional ovarian cysts:

  • follicular ovarian cyst is formed during ovulation from a mature follicle (an egg enclosed in a capsule of two layers of connective tissue), which for some reason has not ruptured. It accounts for about 80% of all ovarian cysts. The size of a follicular cyst usually does not exceed 8 cm in diameter. Small cysts (3-4 cm) develop asymptomatically and disappear on their own within 1-3 menstrual cycles;
  • The cyst of the corpus luteum of the ovary is formed from a gland appeared after the follicle rupture and the release of the egg. The corpus luteum produces progesterone, a hormone that prepares the uterus for pregnancy. If conception has not occurred, it gradually decreases and disappears. In case of hormone imbalance, the corpus luteum does not regress, but forms a cyst of the left or right ovary, the size of which usually does not exceed 8 cm.

Types of organic cysts:

  • endometrioid ovarian cyst is formed due to the deposition of endometrial cells on the ovary and is a manifestation of endometriosis. A cyst is a capsule filled with dark brown, clotted menstrual blood. The size of the endometrioid cyst varies from 1 to 10 cm;
  • dermoid ovarian cyst develops if, during the period of fetus intrauterine growth, the cells of the integumentary epithelium enter the ovary. The cyst consists of a dense capsule, inside which there are derivatives of connective tissue - skin, hair, bones, cartilage. A dermoid cyst is most often found on the right ovary and can be more than 15 cm in diameter;
  • paraovarian cyst of ovary develops between the ages of 20 and 40 and is located between the ovary and the fallopian tube;
  • thecalutein ovarian cyst during pregnancy occurs due to malfunction of corpus luteum, which does not produce enough progesterone. Thecalutein cysts are rarely diagnosed and are characteristic of multiple pregnancies.

Ovarian cyst symptoms

At the initial stages of ovarian cyst development, symptoms of pathology are usually absent. The clinical manifestations of the disease appear later, as the formation increases in size.

The main signs of ovarian cysts include:

  • pain in the lower abdomen. The severity and nature of pain with ovarian cyst depends on its type. With the endometrioid and dermoid ovarian cysts, there is severe and prolonged pain that radiates to the lower back. Functional cysts are accompanied by mild pain in the left or right lower abdomen. Severe acute pain occurs when the ovarian cyst ruptures or twists its root;
  • delay of menstruation or change in the duration and intensity of discharge;
  • discomfort during urination, frequent urge to use the toilet;
  • breast engorgement;
  • bloody vaginal discharge;
  • pain during sexual intercourse.

If you have at least one of the listed symptoms, you should contact your gynecologist and get diagnosed. It is necessary to treat ovarian cyst as early as possible, until the pathology has led to the development of serious complications. One of them is a ruptured ovarian cyst requiring immediate hospitalization.

Causes of ovarian cyst development

The main cause of ovarian cyst development is hormone imbalance. A decrease in the estrogen concentration and the predominance of gonadotropic hormones (mainly follicle-stimulating hormones) leads to acceleration of cell division in the ovaries, which contributes to the formation of cysts.

Factors increasing the risk of developing ovarian cysts include:

  • early onset of the first menstruation;
  • late onset of menopause;
  • pathology of the thyroid gland;
  • metabolic disorders in the body;
  • pharmacologic stimulation of ovulation;
  • tumors of the uterus;
  •  inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs.

Removal of ovarian cyst at “ON Clinic Kharkov”

The medical center “ON Clinic Kharkov” performs laparoscopic removal of the ovarian cyst. Laparoscopy in gynecology is a minimally invasive surgery technique that provides for minimal tissue trauma, a low risk of complications and a short rehabilitation period.

During the surgical removal of ovarian cyst, a special device is used - a laparoscope, which is a flexible probe with a built-in video camera and a light source. An enlarged image from the video camera is displayed on the monitor screen, allowing the doctor to examine the organs and control the actions during the operation.

Stages of ovarian cyst laparoscopy:

  1. A patient is drown in medication sleep (inhalation anesthesia).
  2. Surgeon makes a puncture in the navel area with a special needle and injects gas into the abdominal cavity to provide a good view of the organs.
  3. After inserting the laparoscope into a puncture in the navel area, the doctor makes two additional punctures on the skin of the lower abdomen and inserts surgical instruments into them.
  4. The cyst is removed through the umbilical access.
  5. Gas is removed from the abdominal cavity.
  6. The surgeon applies cosmetic stitches.

The removed cyst is sent to the laboratory for histological analysis to determine whether it is benign or malignant. Laparoscopic removal of ovarian cyst takes 1 hour on average. After the operation, patient stays in the hospital for 1-2 days under the supervision of medical staff.

Preparation for surgery for ovarian cyst removal

Preparation for surgery to remove ovarian cyst begins with a consultation by gynecologist. After the examination, the doctor refers the patient for additional diagnostic tests and consultation by therapist to make sure that there are no contraindications for surgery. During the second appointment, the date of the laparoscopy is assigned. A patient must not eat in the evening before and on the day of the operation and must not drink two hours before the operation.
